They ended up changing the meeting place. After talking to the Square Dancers R Us people, it dawned on Maura that she was leaving the most important people out of this particular conversation: the women at the shelter. They, more than anyone, deserved to have a say in what kind of party they wanted. So an hour before the square dance people were supposed to come, Maura and Dex were in the cafeteria area of the center, meeting with the thirteen women who were housed there, along with their kids, who played in a corner or were held on their mothers’ laps. Dex had asked her to take the lead, so she stood in front of them, laid out what they had done so far and asked for the consensus.

“I really like it.” Sylvia spoke up. “I’ve never square-danced before, but it would be fun to learn. Although I might not be as agile as I normally would be.”

Her throat tightened. Sylvia was still healing from her ordeal.

“It’s not about being agile or perfect. It’s about being able to laugh and have fun with people who have been in similar circumstances.”

Was that what she and Dex were? People who had shared similar circumstances?

It wasn’t quite the same thing. And not everything about her and Dex’s relationship had been bad. Some of it had been sweet and good...and perfect. Even their time on her couch?

Well, that didn’t count, because they weren’t in a relationship anymore.

Several more women spoke up, and all of them were in favor of the hoedown. “The kids would like it, too. I wonder what those fake bulls cost? The kind that twist and turn and you fall off. I bet the kids would love that.”

“That’s a great idea.” Maura scribbled the idea in the notebook she’d brought with her. The hospital had pretty much given them carte blanche as far as costs went, so a bucking bull probably wouldn’t break the bank. She glanced around the room. It wasn’t huge, but put some tables up front with a Christmas meal, which would be served buffet style, and line the walls with straw bales for people to sit on and eat or watch the square dancers in the middle, and it would be fairly simple to transform this place into something out of the ordinary. Especially with a fake rodeo bull for the kids to climb on and try to ride.

Dex was sitting two rows back on the end, watching her. There was something in his eye that made her go warm all over. Hopefully, her face wasn’t beet red in response. But this was turning out to be a lot of fun. If someone had told her a year ago, she’d be planning a square dance with her high school sweetheart she’d have said they were crazy. And maybe she was the crazy one for letting herself get roped into this. Still, it didn’t feel crazy. At least not right now.

She’d thought that sex with him was a bad thing, that it had shown her to be weak.
